  • Sunset: August 16, 2020

Reverend Bernice Miles David, our loving mother, transitioned to Glory on Sunday, August 16, 2020 at the age of 89. Bernice was born on August 29, 1930 in Marlboro County to the late Laura Alston Miles and George Washington Miles. She was educated in the Marlboro County Schools and worked in various industries and retired in 1993 as a nurse’s assistant.

We all know Bernice loved the Lord God with all her heart, soul and mind, and every fabric of her being. She looked forward to giving God all glory and praise whether within the four walls at home or on any public square.

When she was present during worship, everyone knew, and when she was not, everyone knew it as well.

Living a life that was perpetually pleasing to God was the heartbeat of her daily life. She had a love for God’s unfailing word as you would often fine her in bed reading with her legs crossed and eyes piercing across her reading glasses as she hung on every print word. With this love of the Word of God, she was one of the first female ministers to be licensed under the leadership of Pastor J. J. Anderson at the Sawmill Baptist Church.

Further, she would be one of the first female ministers to be ordained by the Pee Dee Baptist Association.

Both of these events occurred in the mid 1980’s. Her Ministry began with her own family as she shared the Gospel as you can see reflected in the lives of her children and entire extended family.

Reverend David began her early walk with Christ as a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She later joined

Sawmill Baptist Church where she was a member for over fifty years. She was actively involved in supporting ministries and community organizations. She was a 27-year colon cancer survivor and worked tirelessly to lead her church and for the past 17 years, her David Family & Friends team to raise in excess of $100,000 for the American Cancer Society. Recently, she was awarded a certificate for 25 years of service in her efforts to find a cure for cancer.

Bernice was preceded in death by her father, George, her mother Laura Miles and her husband Legary David, Sr.; four children; Legary, Jr., Christopher, Christine and Larry. Eight siblings; Earlee, Mattie, Theola, Minnie, Johnny, George, Julian and William.

She is survived by fourteen children; Constance Purvis (Lindsay) of Bennettsville, SC; William “Bill” David

(MaryAnn) of Powder Springs, GA; Brenda Skinner of York, PA; Katie Dorsey of Raleigh, NC; Belengia David of Jacksonville, FL; Gregory David (Leslie) of Lavonia, MI; Sharon Bostic of Bennettsville, SC; Clifton David (Denise) of Charlotte, NC; Kelvin David of Raleigh, NC; Bruce David of Marietta, GA; Tasher “Bernard” David of Bennettsville, SC; Sherry Manning (Greg) of Florence, SC; Terry David of Durham, NC; Dwight David of Wilson, NC; two granddaughters, Tanisha and Naisha David, who were raised in the home. She also leaves to cherish 30 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 9 great great grand-children. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 11:00 a.m. at Sawmill Missionary Baptist Church, 1167 Willamette Road Bennettsville, SC where the Reverend J.J. Anderson is pastor.
